Hey your favorite chaotic character is back! (I’m Ran, Sarn’s son from the Curse Breaker series.)
Did I survive?
Last week, I told you about the trouble I’m in in Storm Spells. If you missed that, you can read last week’s newsletter right now:
My fate is still undecided because a future version of me stopped by for a chat. They do that sometimes. I’m not sure why. To my knowledge, no other character gets visits from their future selves, just me.
Was this visit helpful?
It cleared up one or two points I was confused about. Of course, that older version of me didn’t explain the thing I really needed explained. But he never does, and that’s annoying.
I’m still hoping someone in my party comes up with a plan to save us. Why am I still in that dangerous situation?
Because Storm Spells has chapters from different points of view so I have to wait my turn. I could tell you who’s point of view you get. Do you want to know?
Okay, I’ll tell you. There are chapters from:
My point of view, obviously since I’m telling my part of the story
Uncle Miren’s point of view since he got separated from us at the end of Rogue Spells
Robin’s point of view, but not the Robin from my world. You get the point of view of the version of Robin from your world. She showed up in Rogue Spells and got caught up in our magical mayhem if you forgot.
Dysteria’s point of view since she has a lot of explaining to do
The Newsletter-Dragon’s point of view because it’s about time we heard from her in her own words on what she did in Dragon Spells and Rogue Spells
That’s it so far. Those are all the heads you’re in during Storm Spells. So I have to wait my turn before my part of the story can advance. That’s the only reason I’m stuck on the edge of the cataclysm. I’m trying to make the most of it though since I have to be patient and patience isn’t my strong suit.
So that’s why the world is crumbling around me. Papa is too silent. I know he’s thinking about something, and it had better be an escape plan.
So that’s my current situation—miles too close to the two orbs destroying the world and no helpful portal in sight. (They started doing that in Rogue Spells if you forgot.) I need to talk to that portal about abandoning its post.
I might need to dock its pay. Do portals get paid?
I have some time to look into that while I wait for a rescue.
Anyway, I hope you had a good week and that you aren’t being sucked into a void created by two magical orbs. I don’t recommend that. I’d give that zero stars if I could. Unfortunately, the orbs don’t care about reviews.
But Papa gets five stars for the powerful shield keeping all the rocks and debris swirling around from striking me. I’ll raise that to six stars if he hurries up with that escape plan. How much thinking does he really need to do about that anyway?
Apparently a lot. So I’ll keep you updated. I wonder what my scribe is doing?
Since we haven’t rescued her yet, I don’t know. I hope she’s staying out of trouble but I fear she’s not doing that.
Thank you for taking the poll last week. So far, the plan hasn’t changed. After Melinda finishes Storm Spells, which might be soon, she’ll write Curse Breaker Jousts.
Curse Breaker Jousts will be released in a fancy edition.
Since it’s special story and my scribe had to fight us for 11 books to get us to do the story, it deserves a special edition. So that will happen. I don’t have any details about what that will look like since Melinda is not working on it yet.
While waiting for a rescue, I needed some entertainment. So I watched an interesting video about special editions in the music world and how a new release that came out recently had like 40 different versions of the same album!
The differences were just the album art from what the video said. Now I don’t know if the video was right, but that’s crazy!
I assure you we’ll never do that.
For the special editions for our next release, we tried to keep all the editions identical. But we ran into some limitations and had to split the omnibuses into:
2 hardcover editions that have 3 books in each volume:
A Curse Breaker in NY Books 1-3 has the following books inside it:
Catch the Scribe
Book Battles
Rogue Characters
Curse Breaker’s Companion Books 1-3 has the following books inside it:
Dragon Spells
Rogue Spells
Storm Spells
3 paperback versions that have two books in each volume:
Newsletter Adventures Books 1-2 has the following books inside it:
Catch the Scribe
Book Battles
Newsletter Adventures Books 3-4 has the following books inside it:
Rogue Characters
Dragon Spells
Newsletter Adventures Books 4-6 has the following books inside it:
Rogue Spells
Storm Spells
We had to divide up the books differently for the paperback omnibuses because of the spine width. Paperbacks don’t have anything to reinforce the spine, so it’s just glue holding the book together. At that’s how it is for print on demand. It might be different for print runs.
When you get over 600 pages, which is 1.5 inches thick, the pages put pressure on the spine. So it’s not a good idea to do that.
If Storm Spells doesn’t end soon, we might have to make the hardcover omnibuses only have two books in each volume because the omnibus for Curse Breaker’s Companion Books 1-3 is nearing the page limit right now and the story is still going strong.
I don’t know how many pages I’ll need to rescue my scribe, stop the orbs, and somehow put everything right. So more on that next week.
Melinda worries that the book is going to different places than originally intended. But how can it not?
Melinda is writing the book in 2025 and things have changed a lot in four years.
Besides if the Melinda in 2021 wanted to have a say in this book than she should have written in four years ago. Since she chose to kick it down the line to be a future Melinda’s problem, 2021 Melinda doesn’t get a say.
That’s what I told my scribe. I don’t know if she believes me. But it’s good advice.
So if you’re worried about what your younger self wanted, don’t because your younger self could have done that thing you’re worried about. But they didn’t. Since they made it your problem, you get to solve it your way. So go do the thing.
That’s my words of wisdom for the week.
Until next week, read some good books! You get extra points if I star in it. :)
