It wasn't the only time
In this week's newsletter, find out why I'm not sorry about the summoning and what some characters forged in secret.
Last week, I told you about the first time I got into trouble in Chaos Reigns, and you probably wondered if that was the only time.
(Who am I? Who are you? Just kidding! You signed up for this newsletter because you want to hear from me. It’s Ran, Sarn’s son and sidekick from the Curse Breaker Series and some other books. I hope my intro gave you a laugh.)
Would it surprise you if I said no?
Because I got into trouble again in the same book. Was it my fault again?
Yes, but you would have done the same thing!
If someone knocked on your door and left a gift all wrapped up in fancy paper, what would you have done?
You’d have picked it up and opened it too. You know you would have. Curiosity would have eaten at you until you had to know what was inside. So I opened the box. There was a star-shaped crystal inside.
How could I have known that it was a soul trap?
I found out when it sucked my dad into it. That was when I summoned my aunt. You would have summoned her too. It was just too weird, and she’s good at pulling my dad out of strange situations like that.
But the apocalypse didn’t wait while she did that. I didn’t know that every time I called my aunt to save my dad or my family, I was making Misriah question her role. I didn’t know that made her feel unneeded and unwanted.
If I knew, I still would have called my aunt. I’m sorry Misriah. I know there are rules for guardian angels. They aren’t supposed to get involved in human affairs. But no one stops my aunt from interfering. So that’s why I call her.
If you want me to call you, then you have to break the rules and get involved. I don’t make the rules, but I support breaking them.
That’s the end of my apology. Now back to the story.
So I called my aunt, and she came to help us as I knew she would. She never disappoints me, but sometimes she makes me wait.
I didn’t know that a wrath preyed on Misriah’s mind. I didn’t know she left us to fend for ourselves. I just knew my aunt stayed when the ex-goddess of vengeance showed up and later, a gateway fell from the sky. I’m pretty sure that’s not supposed to happen.
I didn’t know what Misriah did during those events because they were really interesting, and I couldn’t look away. It’s not every day an ex-god shows up and makes wild claims about my family.
Misriah did show up briefly to help with the gateway, but then she left again. Chaos Reigns shows you why she left and who hunted her.
Now you’re wondering when you can read it.
Chaos Reigns: Progress Report
Last week I told you my scribe, Melinda, finished writing Chaos Reigns. And we really thought it was done. But we were all deceived!
The characters forged in secret a different ending, and they bound Melinda—I mean they convinced her to write it.
So that’s what Melinda did this week. She added a new chapter near the end of Chaos Reigns and changed the ending of the last chapter. Then she wrote all the other new stuff into the beginning of the sequel, Chaos in Chains.
I support that decision and not just because Chaos in Chains is the last book Melinda will write before returning to the Curse Breaker series to write the next book for my family. But I support it for that reason too!
The Apocalypse has to end sometime. So why not at the end of Chaos in Chains? There’s no reason for it to go on past the four books devoted to it, right?
I’m not saying that because I want to do something different in the next Curse Breaker book, but I want that too.
So when can you read Chaos Reigns?
Paid subscribers will get an edited ebook copy of Chaos Reigns sometime in June or early July, depending on how editing and formatting go and if the book stays ended.
Who knows what this week will bring? Characters are always conspiring behind the scenes.
You can read the unedited chapters right now on Patreon or Substack. Melinda posted chapters 34-37 this week and she will post the last four chapters next week unless the characters convince her to write more chapters for it.
Maybe they will even stay the last chapters. It could happen. We’ll find out next week if they are.
Melinda is drafting the opening chapters for the sequel to see if that will be the case. I guess you never really know if a book is done.
Chaos Reigns will be available in our upcoming kickstarter that Melinda wants to launch on or near Sept. 27. So that’s another reason I support the ending. Follow the campaign here.
That’s it for this week! Read a fun book until I see you next week.
