Do you like big books?

Hey,

This Ran, and I want to know. I’m the son of Sarn, and he’s the curse breaker in the Curse Breaker series. Why am I asking about big books?

Well, technically digital boxed sets/ebook omnibus are big books, and this week, I thought it would be fun to show you how they’re made!

So how do you cram multiple books together?

Well, I don’t know how other authors do it, but we start with a dragon. If you don’t have one, I would lend you ours, but she’s contrary. So we have to bribe her to get her to do any actual work.

How do we bribe her?

Normal dragons like shiny things like gold coins. But our dragon is digital, so we need to get creative. What do we do?

well, I can’t speak for other characters, but I drop ebooks and scatter them around outside the dragon’s cave. That usually gets her to poke her head out. Then begins the negotiations.

You see, I need her to squash the ebooks until they’re flat enough to fit together. But if you’ve ever tried to get a cat to do something, then you have some idea about the difficulties ahead. After all, dragons and cats are both stubborn, so I have to resort to compliments because petting a dragon is dangerous.

Yup. Dragons have big egos, and the more you stroke them, the more likely they will do what you want. But there’s no guarantee. The dragon might still refuse your request.

If that happens, I just ask: What about the readers? They really want this collection. Will you really deny them?

The dragon will grumble something you can’t hear, growl a lot, and then get down to squashing ebooks. She does this by sitting on the files. But when she gets bored and wanders away, I can stack the ebook files together and get a shiny new omnibus!

So that’s what I did. It took a lot of cajoling for the bigger sets, which is why I asked if you like big books.
