Why did my scribe have to hire a locksmith in the first place?

Because the board that controls all the rules for the apartment complex where my scribe lives sent around a letter. They decided that all door hardware had to be gold. But not just any gold because gold is a soft metal and not really suitable to important things like locks and knobs that get used heavily.

They meant that the locks and knobs had to be the very yellow kind of gold color not actually made of gold. Why weren’t the knobs and locks that color already?

Well, they were decades ago when the place was built. When Melinda’s dad changed them the day my scribe took over the apartment many years ago, the previous door knob was brown like someone painted over it. So they don’t know if that was once gold.

But my scribe didn’t want to pay a fine of an unspecified amount that would be charged on an unspecified schedule until the change was made. So she searched for a local locksmith on the internet and called the first one that popped up in her town.

But that locksmith just came back from surgery, so he gave her the number for another locksmith who is covering for him while he’s recovering. So Melinda called that locksmith and he came over an hour later.

He changed the two door knobs that weren’t in compliance.

(The other knob is on my scribe’s tiny storage closet where she keeps her snow shovels. But that closet is not in her apartment. It’s in a common area next to other unit’s storage closets, so the board can see the knob, unfortunately.

Melinda’s dad changed that knob too a few years ago because the previous one didn’t want to unlock anymore. It had one job, and I guess it was tired of it. But I digress…)

After he changed the knobs, he had to do some work on the door jamb because the strike plate didn’t work for the new knob on either door. Maybe because the building is old? So some sanding, drilling, fiddling, and replacing happened until the new knob latched properly onto the strike plate on both doors.

That was when the magic happened!

The locksmith went to his car and returned with a large plastic suitcase. Inside, it had rows and rows of little cubbies full of different sized and colored pins. He then took apart the knob so he could get this metal cylinder out. Then he inserted the key and then replaced all the pins so they lined up with the teeth on the key!

He did this for both knobs! Then he put them back together and demonstrated that the same key now unlocked both doors! It was so cool to watch that and truly like magic, especially because it required lots of trial and error.

On to the Book News!

Aside from the expensive visit from a locksmith, we had no other drama outside of the books, which is always good because then my scribe gets more done.

What more did she get done this week?

Since Chaos Reigns is edited and done, she formatted the retail edition and the special edition version!

That means she finally made a decision about the interior and stopped stressing about it. So if you were wondering why you haven’t heard about the interior or seen any preliminary pictures of it, that’s why.

(She still has not formatted Curse Breaker Jousts yet, but I hope that will be next. I will nag her about it if it’s not next.)

The Riders of the Apocalypse story arc is really about the horse-shaped demons called the wraths, not their riders. Their riders are more for decoration really and to get them out into the world because the wraths can’t go into the Mortal World unescorted.

Why can’t they do that?

Because in the Holy Book, they have riders. So they have to have riders in our books too. We would never go against that.

But that opens up interesting possibilities for artwork. Since the demons are horse-shaped, we could have horse imagery.

Here’s a draft of one spread for the book. On the left, there’s a black and white drawing of my aunt, Sovvan, looking like I just summoned her, and she has no idea what’s going on.

She also looked skeptical like that when I told her a crystal ate Papa in Shards For His Gift, book 10 of the Curse Breaker Series. She did NOT believe me even though I never lie. But she did get my papa back from wherever the crystal took him, so it worked out.

So that’s how it’s going. Right now, Melinda would like to do some black and white character art on the left and full color chapter headers. But there will also be some full color full page images too.

So if you like horses, you are in for a visual treat.

Melinda says she’s not doing this because she was a big fan of Mercedes Lackey’s Heralds of Valdemar books. They had mind-talking white horses called Companions. But I know she secretly wants a fantasy book with mind-talking horses of her own.

There is a white wrath named Conquest, who causes considerable trouble for our heroes, and he is a white horse who can mind talk and talk out loud. But he’s not the only wrath my aunt needs to capture.

He just got the most page time. I wonder if that’s because he looks like an evil Companion…

Melinda didn’t answer when I asked her if that was the case. But I think it is.

Melinda likes to walk. So she does that every day for an hour or and sometimes longer. But when it’s that hot and humid, it’s dangerous to walk for a long time because of this annoying thing called the wet-bulb temperature.

According to many places on the internet:

When you have high heat and high humidity, your body can’t cool itself by sweating because that sweat can’t evaporate. When that happens, your core temperature rises and if it gets to 107 degrees, you can die.

But if my scribe dies, then I don’t get any more stories, and I don’t get to grow up. I had to avoid that obviously. So that meant, I had to keep my scribe inside where there’s air conditioning and sweat can evaporate and cool her down.

(This is Ran, Sarn’s son from the Curse Breaker Series. I know you didn’t have me giving you a science lesson on your 2026 bingo card, but here we are! My scribe likes science so I end up seeing a lot of science programming. Back to my rant since that’s why you’re here.)

I tried to block the door, but I’m still small and cute because I have not grown up yet, I'm not very tall. So I had to call for reinforcements. Papa made a shield and put it in front of the door and then my scribe had to stay inside.

We also had unhealthy levels of PM2.5 and PM10 from wildfire smoke wafting over NY state. We hope all affected took precautions and stayed as safe as possible. On social media, Melinda saw screenshots of air quality levels far higher than what NY experienced.

For our northern neighbors, we hope you got tons of rain soon to put out the fires and the help that you need. There wasn’t a consensus online that my scribe could find about where to donate to help. So if you know, please let us know.

Did I get any page time for my efforts?

You’d think so, but alas, I didn’t. Melinda wrote more chapters for Chaos in Chains and there’s another wild plot twist I really want to tell you about. But I don’t know where it’s going yet, so I’ll be good and wait even though it’s so hard no to talk about it!

Chapters 13-16 from Chaos in Chains published this week to paid subscribers on Patreon and Substack. That’s exciting because we’re getting close to the midpoint!

Melinda also finished the edits on Chaos Reigns, and she sent a copy of the final ebook to our three wonderful paid subscribers. The ebook went directly to their bookfunnel libraries.

If there’s any issue with that, please let us know and Melinda will fix that.

There usually isn’t an issue, but we weren’t sure about one subscriber’s bookfunnel library address. We emailed to ask, but never got a reply. Maybe our email went to spam?

New podcast episodes!

One episode, Melinda actually recorded a month ago and then she had to hold the episode because the book wasn’t up for preorder yet. But she got the official word that the book can be ordered now, so she published the episode!

In that episode, my scribe talked to Elliot Blake about his book, Into the Great. She put the “& more” in the podcast title to the test this week since Into the Great is not actually a fantasy book. But the public relation person from the publisher made such a great pitch that my scribe said, “why not talk to him?”

(I didn’t have a reason to say no, so she interviewed him.)

Well, it’s not about me. But that’s okay since the book is not written by my scribe. Sorry, I just had to go there. Sometimes, I can’t help myself.

The Other New Episode

This week, I urged my scribe to grab the mic and talk about our books. So she talked about Chaos Reigns since it was on her mind because she was editing it. That was my plan along, so I’ll put this in the win column!

Melinda doesn’t always listen to me, but she really should. I am just looking out for her.

So if you’d like to hear what she has to say about Chaos Reigns, this is your golden opportunity. It’s a short podcast since Melinda really wanted to talk about the big twists (yes, there are 2 now!) in Chaos in Chains because that’s on her mind right now.

But she refrained since no one is sure where those twists are going. So we’ve decided not to give any spoilers until we know more about the 2 big twists and what might happen. We don’t want to give you a false impression or promise something the story can’t deliver.

What’s the dilemma?

The reading order of the Riders of the Apocalypse story arc is under discussion this week because it’s become increasingly obvious that the one currently displayed in our Kickstarter banner may not be correct:

Why might it be incorrect?

Because events did not happen the way Melinda thought they would when she made that graphic.

It’s not all the books in the picture that might be out of order. The ones with Chaos in the title are in chronological order. The problem is Curse Breaker Jousts, and that really bothers me because I’m in it and all my scenes are brand new!

Why is it Curse Breaker Jousts a problem?

Melinda wrote the story arc in the order pictured above:

1. Chaos Rises

2. Curse Breaker Jousts

3. Chaos Reigns

4. Chaos in Chains

But if we go by the events in the book, Curse Breaker Jousts takes place concurrently with Chaos in Chains.

So that begs the question, when should you read it?

Should you read it before Chaos in Chains?

If you do, then you’ll know how one of the wraths (War) is captured. But if you read Chaos in Chains first, it’ll spoil the big climax in Curse Breaker Jousts. I can’t have that, so I’m putting foot down.

I urge you to read the books in the following order so you are as surprised as I and the rest of the character in Curse Breaker Jousts are by the events as they unfold. Besides, my books always precede books that star my aunt. That’s just how it is. I don’t make the rules.

The reading order should be:

1. Chaos Rises

2. Chaos Reigns

3. Curse Breaker Jousts

4. Chaos in Chains

If you read it in that order, then you get all to enjoy all the magical mayhem in Curse Breaker Jousts, and nothing is spoiled.

You’ll know that my aunt will capture War and how. But that’s not a big part of Chaos in Chains and there is plenty that is brand new in that book.

Chaos Reigns actually takes place simultaneously with Curse Breaker Revealed, Shards For His Gift, and Chasing Dragons (books 9-11 of the Curse Breaker Series). Curse Breaker Jousts is book 12 in the series.

So I think we found our reading order! Now I need to get the banner updated…

Thank you for being a sounding board. The reading order gets complicated to figure out when multiple series are involved.

We should probably stop doing crossovers. You are so right! Why didn’t I realize that sooner?

Since I don’t usually plan the crossovers, I can’t actually make good on that recommendation. I’ll pass it on to the other characters, but I can’t promise they will listen.

So aside from getting confused about the reading order, I watched some kitchen nightmares unfold.

My scribe is great at writing books, but she’s not a good cook. Somehow, she’s always missing an essential ingredient, and she doesn’t notice until it’s too late. Despite reading the recipe, she always misses an important step.

Those two errors combine to sabotage so many things she’s tried to make over the years. So it’s a good thing I now live in Inari and Nolo’s apartment because I’d starve if I had to depend on my scribe for food.

Melinda was feeling much better this week, so she wrote more for Chaos in Chains and chapters 9-12 posted this past weekend. You can check them out on Patreon and Substack.

Aan she expects to have the final edits this week for Chaos Reigns, so keep an eye out for that if you’re on a paid tier. As soon as those edits come in, Melinda can finalize the book and send it out.

Remember earlier when I mentioned crossovers?

Well, I think the characters in Chaos in Chains are setting up another one. But it’s unclear at this point if this new crossover will be a new world-ending event or something else. It’s also not known when the events they are busy setting up while my aunt is trying to stop the current apocalypse will affect anyone outside the afterlife.

I could get lucky this time and the problem could stay on their side of things. It could happen. You’ll see what I mean when you read it. If you saw it coming, then you must be able to see the future because not even my scribe saw it coming.

Fay definitely didn’t see it coming, and she’s the ex-goddess of fate and the future. She would have warned the characters doing this thing that I can’t talk about because that would be a major spoiler that it’s not a good idea and won’t lead to anything good for anyone.

But no one asked her. They didn’t ask me either because I would have said that too.

The thing I can’t talk about isn’t posted on Patreon or Substack yet, but it will be posted either next week or the week after that. So it’s arrival is imminent. Once it’s posted and someone reads it, then it’s set in stone. We’ll have to do it eventually.

That might be why Melinda messed up the two things she tried to cook this week. She’s wondering where certain characters are going with this interesting plot point that definitely wasn’t in any outline for any book.

The characters in question are taking the chaos part of the book title too seriously. We’ll have to up our game in the next Curse Breaker book because we can’t let a bunch of angels and an ex-war god create all the chaos.

Don’t tell Papa I said that. He doesn’t like chaos. It’s usually hazardous for his health and mine. But a little chaos isn’t a bad thing, right?

I didn't want the weather to derail my brilliant plan. So when the heatwave hit NY State, I had to do something. So I made a new plan.

But I might have gone a little too far with things. Did you expect that?

I've seen them sniffing around our website. I don't know what the AIs are looking for. But they keep coming back and bringing their friends. Do they like stories?

I should probably tell you what I did now and stop stalling. This is Ran, Sarn's son from the Curse Breaker Series in case you were wondering.

Okay enough stalling. You want to know about my plans.

Did I mention that my original plan is brilliant? Because it was until I made the expensive mistake.

Over the years, readers like yourself, have asked for maps. I've asked too so it wasn't just you asking.

I'd also like to know where things are so I can plan future adventures. That's probably why there are no maps yet. Melinda’s on to me. (She's my scribe.)

But I might have encouraged the characters in the Riders of the Apocalypse series to travel and see the world so Melinda would need a map to keep track of where everyone is.

If that plan failed, I found her old journals, and guess what? There are maps in them! So I planned to slip them in somehow. I haven't worked out how yet because I'm hoping Melinda will do that so I don’t have to learn how to format books. It looks complicated to do that, and I like to stay away from complicated things.

I wanted her to work on those maps this past week since that’s a good inside activity. But it got really hot. On Thursday, it was 101 degrees, and my scribe melted into a pool of sweat had to ooze home.

(Her words not mine. I overheard her telling her neighbor that when he saw her outside walking in the morning.)

I couldn't find any footage of that or any pictures, so I think she might be exaggerating. (My scribe likes to walk and she doesn't like to skip a walk because of a silly thing like the weather being really hot and humid.)

I couldn't prove that she was exaggerating either because there were no photos or videos. But she looked wilted where she slumped on the couch when she returned.

The couch is not near her PC where the hand-drawn maps she made the summer when she was 13 could be digitized and updated. Nor could I get any page time if she's just sitting there, contemplating her life choices.

So I might have turned up the air conditioning until my scribe was shivering and pulling on extra layers. But in my defense, I didn't know that air conditioning uses electricity and that costs money.

Melinda turned the air conditioning down so her apartment could warm up to more comfortable room temperature. She doesn't like the cold, and she says that she can't type with gloves on.

But she does type with gloves on in the winter when she's out walking in the cold. I'm not sure why she can't type with gloves on in the summer in her apartment. That doesn’t make sense.

Melinda didn't explain either. (She doesn’t always answer me.)

So if you're in need of a good book, may I suggest one of mine? It would help pay the electric bill and get me back my scribe's good graces. If you can’t, no worries! Thoughts and prayers are also helpful.

So those were my two plans, and I might have succeeded if my scribe didn’t get violently ill. Don’t worry. I swung into action and summoned her neighbors for help. Then I went back to Mount Eredren, so no one could ask me to help clean up.

I don’t clean. I’ll help assemble stuff and come up with ideas, but I draw the line at cleaning. So I got out of there fast, and didn’t return until my scribe’s digestive issues subsided. She’s better today, but she says everything hurts. That’s understandable since muscles and organs moved in ways they aren’t supposed to. That can irritate them.

So I’ll give my scribe a a few days to recuperate and then it’s back to Operation Maps!

Melinda didn’t get much writing done this week, but she got some edits done on Chaos Reigns. She also posted chapters 5-8 of Chaos in Chains on Patreon and Substack for paid members. So you can read what the characters are up to and see why I am begging for some maps!

(Just a reminder—this is not just a ploy so I can find out where everyone is and plan future adventures to the places on the maps I want Melinda to make. But I’m not saying that I won’t do that too because we all know that I will.)
